Dear Pa

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It is hard to believe we have already reached the end of first quarter.  Student progress reports will be mailed by November 10th.  As we have shared in previous communications, we are making shifts in our assessment and grading practices.  We are making these changes for the following reasons:

  1. Value learning as a process that is not immediately mastered

  2. Increase student ownership and understanding of their progress and grades.

  3. Make clear the link between course outcomes and grades

  4. Clearly differentiate between academic outcomes and behavior (habits of learning)

Below you find resources to help you better understand these shifts, including a video that will help you better navigate and understand changes to PowerSchool Gradebook.

Emergency Response Update

We want to provide communication regarding the recent number of emergency calls we have experienced at our site. As in recent instances, most of our emergency response needs this school year have been due to individual student health/safety needs and did not involve other students. As new students enter our building each year, our staff works diligently to recognize their individual needs, and this year, we will continue to work with any students who need support for a variety of reasons--sometimes this requires contacting emergency services. As a reminder, emergency services are called for a number of reasons, including if a student is experiencing a medical emergency (seizures, allergies, playground incidents, etc.) or if a student's mental health is presenting a danger to themselves or others. If it were a more significant scenario, more detailed information would be communicated to parents.

Calling for emergency support for the safety of students/staff is obviously not a new practice for schools, but we feel we owe it to our families to alert you when law enforcement or emergency services respond to a call at our building, especially to address any worry you may have as a parent for your own child. It is important to note that in most cases student’s routines are not affected and students are often not even aware Emergency Services are present. We thank you for your understanding as we also desire to recognize student privacy and their Personal Health Information (PHI) when communicating out situations that arise.
