-there are four productions per year, plus a summer drama class.  You may participate in zero, one, two, three, four or all five of the productions!

-productions are open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students attending school in Verona.

-everyone who auditions will get a part!  Don’t worry about “not being good enough” - you are!  If you want to be a part of Drama Club, I want to work with you!

-the extra curricular fee for any middle school activity is $40. This includes basketball, volleyball, cross country, track and all drama activities. Improv Comedy and the one act plays are one activity, Forensics is another, and the all school musical is another.  I can explain why that is but it’s a long story! Scholarships are available. Don’t let the fee stop you from being involved!

-a strong emphasis is placed on ensemble building, celebrating each other’s greatness, respecting one another, improving drama and speaking skills, and having fun!

-each production offers an optional field trip to go see area theatre

Are you good at making people laugh?  Do you think quickly? Do you like being silly?  Are you a fan of the tv show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”  If you said yes to any of these questions, Improvisational Comedy Shorts is the activity for you!  We’ll learn six really cool games and present them to an audience. You’ll laugh until milk comes out of your nose, or your frowns will be cheerfully refunded!  This activity rehearses at Badger Ridge, but there is a bus that takes Savanna Oaks students to BRMS!

Rehearsals: Mondays and Wednesdays starting September 4th from 3:45-5:30

Performances: Wednesday, October 2nd during the day and evening (you will

need to be at BRMS at 6:00 that night for the 7:00 show, the show will end at

8:45, we will have a cast only cast party until 9:30 pm)

This is a series of four one act plays.  Every student who auditions will be cast in one show.  Three shows rehearse at Badger Ridge.  One show rehearses at Savanna Oaks. You may audition for any show!  Transportation will be available.

The Monday night show will rehearse at SOMS.  It will be the comedy “Dystopia: The Hungry Games Maze of Divergent Death” by Don Zoldis. This is a very funny parody of popular dystopian novels. Don Zoldis is one of my favorite playrites! Laugh along as the characters get zapped in different ways. The show has a gentle message about what we value in our society.

The Tuesday night show will rehearse at BRMS.  It will be the Shakespearean tragedy turned comedy “The Winter’s Tale”. This is a great story of jealousy, making mistakes and fixing them. And yes, there will be a bear! Don’t be scared off by the language - it’s not as hard as you think!

The Wednesday night show will rehearse at BRMS.  “Dark Road” is a drama about the Holocaust, where people stopped acting like human beings toward each other and sent six million people to their deaths because they were the “wrong” religion. This show still has a strong message for us today about the importance of learning from history.

The Thursday night show will rehearse at BRMS.  It is the comedy “The One Act Play Disaster”, also by Don Zoldis! This is a new comedy he just wrote last year. We’ll be one of the first groups to perform it! The title tells you all you need to know about the plot. I laughed out loud numerous times reading this script!

All casts will have a total of 10 rehearsals, with Saturday rehearsals on November 2nd, November 16th and December 7th. You are strongly encouraged to read scripts before auditioning.  You can read script samples of “Dystopia”, “Dark Road” and “The One Act Play Disaster” for free at www.playscripts.com. See me for a script sample from “The Winter’s Tale”.

Auditions: Wednesday, October 2nd at Badger Ridge, Monday, October 7th at

Savanna Oaks and Wednesday, October 9th at Badger Ridge, from 3:45-5:30

pm each night.  You must audition on one night.

Rehearsals: once a week from 3:45-5:30 pm starting the week of October 14th.

Performances: December 11th at BRMS for “Dark Road” and “The One Act Play

That Ends Badly”, and December 12th at SOMS for “Dystopia” and “The Winter’s

Tale” You will need to be there at 6:00 pm on the night of your show, which will

start at 7:00 pm. You will be done by 8:30 pm.

Cast Party: Thursday, December 19th from 3:45-5:30 pm at BRMS for all casts

This is a speech and drama activity that puts you in the driver’s seat!  There are 15 categories to choose from, including play acting, solo acting, poetry, prose, four minute speech, radio news broadcast and skits.  You may choose a category where you work by yourself, or in a group. You may choose a category where you memorize your selection or read it. If you want an extra challenge, you may choose two categories. It’s all about you!  You perform at “meets” on Saturdays. Transportation is provided to “away” meets.

Rehearsals: once a week starting the week of December 17th.

Performances: Saturdays, January 25th (Badger Ridge), February 1st (Kromrey -

Middleton) and 8th (DeForest), and a Family Night performance on Monday,

February 3rd (at SOMS) from 7-9 pm.

This is the most time intensive of the activities, but also a great deal of fun!  Every student who auditions will be cast!  You do not need prior singing or dancing experience.  All rehearsals are at BRMS. Transportation is provided.  Ms. Nelson, the Choir director at BRMS does the musical direction, while I do the stage direction. This year’s musical is “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown”.  This is a fun show fun show that follows a day in the life of the lovable Peanuts characters. Our production will feature a baseball game onstage, fire hydrants that shoot super soakers, a flying kite and a dancing blanket, among other things. Due to overlapping schedules, you may not do track and the musical.  Sometimes life is full of hard choices!

Auditions: Monday, February 4th and Tuesday, February 5th from 3:45-6:00

pm.  You must audition on one night. Students interested in working backstage

must attend one of the audition nights as well!

Rehearsals: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-6:00 pm for the full cast, starting

Thursday, February 6th.  Small groups also rehearse on Mondays and

Wednesdays from 3:45-5:30 pm.  There are three Saturday rehearsals for the

full cast from 9:00am-1:00pm on March 7th, March 14th and April 18th.  The full

cast also rehearses Monday through Thursday from 3:45-6:00 pm the weeks of

            April 6th and 13th.

Performances: School shows on April 20th and 21st during the day, evening

shows on April 22nd and 23rd (you will need to be at BRMS at 5:30 pm, with the

Cast Party: Wednesday, April 29th from 3:45-6:00 pm

The morning class meets from 8:30 am -12:00 noon. The afternoon class meets from 12:00 noon-3:30 pm.  Each class performs a different one-act play. You may take either class. If you have taken the class before, you are welcome to take the class again! The class will run from June 15th-25th.  The cost of the class is $100. Registration will begin online through the VASD website around April 1st and continue until the classes are full.
